Interesting Facts About Atlanta
- Atlanta was originally named Marthasville. A man named
Richard Peters, who was the superintendent of the Georgia
Railroad, suggested that the name be changed because it was too
long to fit on train schedules. He suggested "Atlanta"
which was dervied from the Western & Atlantic depot. The
name was officially adopted in 1845.
- The Atlanta Braves baseball franshise was an original member
of the National League in 1876. The team started in Boston and
then moved to Milwaukee before settling in Atlanta in 1966.
Prior to being called Braves they were also called Red Caps, Red
Stockings, Beaneaters, Doves, Rustlers, and Bees.
- The top ten states with residents migrating to the Atlanta
area are; Florida, Texas, Alabama, California, South Carolina,
New York, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Ohio.
- A 1996 report found that Atlantans spend more money per
capita eating out than any other city.
- There are more than 1,244 miles of interstate highways in
Georgia.
- The dome atop the Georgia Capitol Building is 23-karat gold
brought down from the mountains of Dahlonega, GA.
- More than 16.5 million people visit Atlanta each year.
- State Bird - Brown Thrasher (for whom the new Atlanta
Thrashers NHL team is named).
